The Aptera Forum
I understood too the “available thin flexible mono crystalline solar cells were these shaped solar cells, to easily conform to the curved sutfaces
Jason Hill said the reason they are laid out in a diamond pattern is they were able to get more on the vehicle
All replaceable by the owner at a later sate to complement their Right to Repair program
Have you seen a solar cell larger than 5 or 6 inches across? I don't believe they can be manufactured any larger than that economically.
and even if you could, they might not have the flexibility to conform to the complex shape of the car.
I guess a guy can learn a thing or two here.
The cells only really bend well in one plane. The full solar option includes 180 cells and they are laid out in a pretty space efficient manner.
Doesn't really answer my question at all. If they were manufactured to the shape of the hood then there ya go.
Good Question, It would make it look much nicer without all the diamonds, though it is a quirky character
I also don't see the value here of asking questions to just get guesses from others that don't actually know the facts. Aptera runs this site so they should answer the questions.
Craig, I understand the desire, but look at the volume of questions and comments, especially when you include the other social media as well. It would be impossible without dedicating more than one full time person to just doing that. As it is, I see Sarah responding to emails in the wee hours. We all need Aptera to be spending as much of their energy as possible in getting the cars finished and produced.
This is one of the reasons that Aptera has the Brand Ambassador program, which I and others have taken very seriously.
Understood. Just seems like a lot of yacking back and forth. I personally would rather see Just the facts and forego the speculation from hundreds of folks that know no more than me.

I imagine the main issue would be that the curves on the vehicle are in multiple directions. A simple curve in one plane would be fine for a large cell. But a compound curve would be like trying to wrap a sheet of paper around a ball. Even a large ball would result in crinkles. You could make the solar panel curved to match the vehicle but that would make the cost go way up.
