I was hoping if I buy this vehicle that I could use it to drive for Uber Eats, GrubHub for some income and to show off the car. But, having only a 9" opening at the largest point, the middle of the frame I don't think is adequate. McDonald's includes the whole order including drinks in 1 large bag. The windows on my 1st generation Chevy Volt is smaller than the average car and is sort of the limit of comfortable exchange of food although I still need to tilt the bag considerably sometimes.
I understand the design is needed because of the slope of the door frame, I just wish it wasn't so.
Perhaps instead of any roll-down ability, have the whole window flip down on a hinge. Just have to be careful of having it slam down against the door and damage.
Interesting.
And that would be an impressive ride for deliveries!
My wife doesn’t let me eat fast food 😞. Maybe the Aptera will keep me honest and healthier.
She said .....after this pandemic.....I can take her to fine dining and have a valet park the Aptera😉.
I guess that limited side window clearance will be fine with most toll roads, even though many of those are going to touchless systems. Otherwise I never have much occasion to open my windows except at one border crossing checkpoint. I don’t even use the drive up ATM any more as “Plastic is King” these days...
I never owned a vehicle with winged doors..It will be interesting how easily they swing open and closed. I believe if you park the widest part of the Aptera (it’s front wheels) about ten inches from a wall the full open of the door is fine.
I understand the door strap is to aid folks with shorter reach.
regarding the break in that spilt window, depending on driver height... I wonder is that forms a blind spot? Surely clear view of the front *wheels will be paramount, especially when initially getting acquainted with it. I trust there will be proximity sensors too, to help with that *extremity.
@Len yeah the window is a big downside for me. Opening the door and standing up to drive-thru window every time would be annoying.
@Daniel Watkins does MC D and such have options to park and pick up so you park in a more open space and can pick up there? Like call/order ahead and pick up? You may have to limit your fast food choices and have those sites promote Aptera(Aptera 😊 Friendly). If my wife was reading this she would want to know why I know such much about these options🤐 To which I might reply” in these pandemic times,,, I must check out options”🤥😉
@Len that's only if they don't have the food ready. I don't want to be known as the guy that always asks for someone to come out to me. Mcd employees are always busy.
As well as I can't hang my leg out the window to relax.
I see your point!
Start taking yoga now...
PS
You will have to trade in those sneakers for the Back to The Future
Aptera sneakers!
Labeled + and - for your safety
Even if the window opened wider, you may have another issue with drive-throughs: with the "outrigger" front wheels, you can't get as close to the drive-through window as on normal cars. Then again, maybe that means you should just open the door.
Surely To Be Seen...especially for a short reach....
But we do know these dimensions...and ...
✅ the door bows out a bit, that is why the side view camera lens stick out like a little antenna to see around that curve.
✅ I was told a ten inch space from the front wheel covers to a wall will provide plenty of room for a full upward door swing
✅ in case you ever need to open the door in a drive up situation.... what they have engineered already is a strap on the inside of the door “in case” your reach is short, it will aid in bringing the door closed while sitting in a seat.
Remember the old Subaru SVX sedan with the spilt side windows? Of course they were not curved and were larger, if I recall correctly.
